A musical box UK usage; music box in US English is an automatic musical instrument in a box which produces musical notes by using a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc to pluck the tuned teeth or lamellae of a steel comb. The earliest known mechanical musical instruments date back to 9th-century Baghdad. In Flanders , in the early 13th century, a bell ringer invented a cylinder with pins which operate cams, which then hit the bells. See below. The original snuff boxes were tiny containers which could fit into a gentleman's waistcoat pocket. The music boxes could have any size from that of a hat box to a large piece of furniture, but most were tabletop specimens. They were usually powered by clockwork and originally produced by artisan watchmakers. For most of the 19th century, the bulk of music box production was concentrated in Switzerland, building upon a strong watchmaking tradition. There were also a few manufacturers in Bohemia and Germany. By the end of the 19th century, some of the European makers had opened factories in the United States.
We are very excited to announce that our closest partner Muro Box has launched an Indiegogo campaign! After their first successful crowdfunding campaign in Taiwan they spent almost 2 years in the pilot run production, and now when the final batch of the music boxes has been successfully produced and shipped to their first backers, they are launching a global campaign. If you would like to learn more about the team behind this truly unique project and their journey, we strongly recommend checking out their story. It was quite a fascinating journey. We are happy to announce our collaboration with the creators of Muro Box - the world's first app-controlled music box. It is a small, but very ambitious startup from Taiwan, where they had great success with their crowdfunding campaign. They have successfully built a prototype of the music box and their team is currently working really hard on making final adjustments to the product, in order to ship the first batch to their early bird supporters. In the mean time we've played around with the alpha version of their smartphone app and enabled melody export from our website into it. Oh, and there are some rumours that Muro Box team is about to launch another crowdfunding campaign, this time on Indiegogo, so make sure to sign up for their newsletter to get updates directly from them.
